AI Watermark Remover

The AI Watermark Remover is a free browser tool that scans text for invisible characters, names every one it finds, and removes the categories you select. It is detection first: the scan always reports everything, and nothing is removed until you say so.

What the scan finds

Every character is classified into one of three groups.

Smuggled payload carriers. These have no place in ordinary prose:

  • Unicode tag characters (the U+E0000 block), where each character maps to an ASCII letter, so a run of them spells a hidden message
  • Variation selector runs, where each selector carries one byte. This is the most common way to smuggle data through text today
  • Invisible fillers, invisible math operators, interlinear annotation markers, and Unicode noncharacters

Invisible and format characters. Rarely needed in ordinary writing, so they are removed by default: zero-width characters, direction controls, nonprinting control codes, and every remaining Unicode format character. That last category is what catches marks a fixed character list would miss.

Contextual characters. Reported but left in place unless you turn them on, because they have real uses: joiners and non-joiners (emoji families, Arabic and Indic text), single variation selectors (color emoji), unusual spaces, lookalike letters, and replacement characters.

Decoding hidden messages

When the hidden characters are carrying readable data, the scan decodes it and shows you the message. Tag characters, variation selector runs, and zero-width binary sequences are all decoded when the bytes resolve to printable text.

What a character scan cannot do

This matters more than what the tool removes.

  • Verifiable: invisible characters, format controls, and smuggled payloads are countable. The scan names each one, shows where it sits, and the counts after cleaning are yours to check.
  • Best effort: statistical watermarks such as SynthID Text live in word choice. The model biases which token it picks, so the signal is spread across the whole text and no character edit reaches it. Only rewriting moves that signal, and a rewrite cannot exceed the quality of the model doing the rewriting.
  • Out of scope: Content Credentials (C2PA), EXIF, and XMP live inside image, PDF, and document files rather than in text. Pixel and audio watermarks are a separate layer again. Pasting text here does not touch any of them.

Any tool that promises to strip an AI watermark from text by deleting characters is describing something else.

Privacy

The scan runs in the browser. The page does not submit or store your text, marketing trackers are disabled, and the text is cleared before the page is saved in the app's navigation cache. Only your category preferences are kept in local browser storage.

Responsible use

The tool finds and removes characters. It is not an AI detector, it cannot tell you who wrote a text, and it cannot promise that any detector will change its verdict. Use it to clean text you own and to inspect text you were given, not to conceal authorship where disclosure is required.
