Why don’t my ChatGPT chats show citations?

If ChatGPT doesn’t display citations, it’s because the AI answered using its existing knowledge rather than conducting a web search.

This commonly occurs with straightforward questions or familiar topics. Although you won’t see live citations to monitor, the response is still based on the same kinds of citations where your brand could be mentioned.

What this means: Your brand can still shape these responses by maintaining a strong online presence, even when no sources are displayed.

How LLM Pulse tracks citations across AI models

Citation behavior varies by AI model, so LLM Pulse records sources separately for every AI model you track: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. When an answer searches the web, we capture the domains it cited and roll them up so you can see which sources each model relies on.

Citation Sources view in LLM Pulse showing which domains each AI model cites, with a per-model breakdown

The per-model breakdown is useful precisely because a question that returns no citations in one model may trigger a web search in another. Tracking sources across all of them gives you a fuller picture of where your brand shows up, even when a single ChatGPT answer comes back without visible links.
