Why does Gemini sometimes decline to answer?

Some Gemini answers in LLM Pulse show No Results because Gemini declined to answer the prompt. When you open one of these answers, a note on the answer page says that Gemini declined and shows the reply it gave instead.

Why Gemini declines some prompts

Gemini sometimes declines prompts on sensitive or regulated topics, such as tobacco, gambling, alcohol or health. It also declines when one of its safety filters is triggered. This varies from run to run, so the same prompt can be answered in one run and declined in another.

How declined answers count

LLM Pulse counts a declined answer as no answer and leaves it out of visibility (mention rate) and the other metrics, so it does not lower your visibility or count as a missed mention. The other AI models you track are not affected, and their answers to the same prompt count as usual. How are metrics calculated at LLM Pulse? explains each metric.

What you can do

Nothing is wrong with your project. Prompts phrased around a brand's products in sensitive or regulated categories are the most likely to be declined. To see how your brand appears for one of these prompts, compare it with the answers from the other AI models you track.
