GoogleOther is a secondary web crawler operated by Google. Unlike Googlebot (which is used for search indexing), GoogleOther handles various non-search crawling tasks such as research, one-off crawls, and data collection for other Google products.
Google introduced the GoogleOther user-agent in 2023 to give webmasters more granular control. Before GoogleOther, all Google crawling used the Googlebot user-agent, making it impossible to distinguish search crawls from other types.
By separating GoogleOther from Googlebot, webmasters can now block non-search crawling while still allowing their pages to be indexed in Google Search.
To block GoogleOther while still allowing Googlebot (search indexing), add the following to your robots.txt:
robots.txt
User-agent: GoogleOther Disallow: /
Blocking GoogleOther does NOT affect your Google Search rankings. It only prevents non-search crawling by Google. Your pages will still be indexed normally by Googlebot.
GoogleOther uses the same IP ranges as Googlebot. Verify via reverse DNS, legitimate IPs resolve to *.googlebot.com or *.google.com.

GoogleOther's activity does not directly affect your Google Search rankings. However, the data it collects may be used for Google's AI products, research projects, or other services.
Some webmasters choose to block GoogleOther to reduce server load and limit Google's data collection to only what's necessary for search indexing.
